OUR MISSION
The United Katehnuaka Longhouse was founded for the sole purpose to create an atmosphere of positivity for Native American People in Southeastern North Carolina primarily in socially and economically challenged areas. It is the mission of our longhouse to help strengthen the spiritual and physical well-being of Native American families through nutritional education, substance abuse counseling, and social work platforms while incorporating and revitalizing cultural traditions.
OUR LONGHOUSE
The United Katehnuaka Longhouse is non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our organization is comprised of Eastern North Carolina tribal members. Historically a longhouse was a place where Algonquian and Iroquois families all lived under one roof. It was where they provided for their families physically and spiritually while practicing their culture. That is exactly the mission of the United Katehnuaka Longhouse today.
The word "United" was chosen for unification of the people. The word "Katehnuaka" was chosen because it means people of the submerged pine tree in our language. The word "Longhouse" was chosen because of traditional value of the gathering place where these traditional values were held.
WHAT WE DO
The United Katehnuaka Longhouse host a variety of fundraising events annually to support the initiative to provide counseling, nutrition, and sociological programs to Native American Families in need.
The United Katehnuaka Longhouse also conducts several Native American cultural events throughout the year to promote cultural revitalization within the native communities to demonstrate positive reflection on Native American identity.
